Letting My Mind Breathe
A Quiet Morning at the Lake

Not every adventure has to leave you exhausted.
Sometimes, the best ones leave you feeling rested.
After weeks of training, hiking, working, and keeping up with the responsibilities of everyday life, I needed something different.
I needed quiet.
So I rented a kayak and spent the morning on Hope Mills Lake.
No finish line.
No pace to maintain.
No mountain to climb.
Just calm water, the sound of birds in the distance, and the gentle rhythm of my paddle moving through the lake.
I brought a book with me, found a peaceful spot, and simply allowed myself to slow down.

No phone.
No notifications.
No pressure to accomplish anything.
Just time to breathe.
As I sat there surrounded by nature, I realized how rarely we give ourselves permission to be still.
We’re constantly chasing the next goal, the next project, the next responsibility.
Sometimes we forget that rest isn’t something we earn.
It’s something we need.
That morning reminded me that adventure isn’t always about pushing harder.

Sometimes it’s about slowing down enough to notice the beauty that’s been there all along.
I left the lake feeling lighter than when I arrived.
Not because anything in my life had changed.
But because I had.
Even a few quiet hours in nature can reset your perspective.
Reflection
For a long time, I believed growth only happened when I was doing something difficult.
A harder hike.
A longer run.
A bigger challenge.
But this morning taught me something different.
Growth also happens in stillness.
It happens when we make space to think, pray, read, and simply exist without rushing.
Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is give our minds permission to breathe.
Peace doesn’t always come from changing our circumstances.
Sometimes it comes from changing our pace.
