Finding Peace Along the Cape Fear River

Cape Fear River Trail | Fayetteville, NC
Distance: 8.50 miles

Some hikes are about reaching a summit.
Some are about chasing waterfalls.
And some are simply about putting one foot in front of the other.
This was one of those days on the trails.
On a quiet Sunday morning, I headed to the Cape Fear River Trail by myself for a long walk/run.

No race to train for. No destination to conquer. Just me, the trail, and 8.5 miles to clear my mind.

One of my favorite things about this trail is how peaceful it feels. The Cape Fear River quietly follows beside the path while tall trees create a canopy overhead, making it easy to forget you’re only minutes from the city.
Along the way, I stopped at the small waterfall tucked beside the trail. After weeks of dry weather, there was barely enough water flowing over the rocks to call it a waterfall.

At first, I felt a little disappointed.
Then I realized something.
Not everything has to be at its fullest to be beautiful.
That little stream was still flowing. Maybe not as powerfully as it does after a heavy rain, but it hadn’t stopped.
I couldn’t help but relate.
Life has seasons when we feel strong, confident, and full of energy. Then there are seasons when we’re exhausted, carrying heavy burdens, and wondering if we’re making any progress at all.
But even in those seasons, we’re still moving forward.
One step.
One mile.
One day at a time.
By the end of my 8.5 miles, nothing extraordinary had happened.
I didn’t stand on a mountain summit.
I didn’t see a spectacular waterfall.
But I had covered 8.5 miles—walking when I needed to, running when I could, and letting the miles quiet my mind along the way.
Maybe that was the extraordinary part.
I didn’t have to be the fastest. I didn’t have to run every mile. I just had to keep moving.

One step.
One mile.
One day at a time.
