Every Mile Has a Name

Wear Blue: Run to Remember 5K
Sunday, May 25, 2026

Some races are about finishing fast.

Some are about setting a personal record.

This race wasn’t about either.

It was about remembering.

As a veteran, Memorial Day has always carried a deeper meaning for me. It isn’t simply the unofficial start of summer or a long weekend. It’s a time to pause and honor the men and women who never made it home.

For the Wear Blue: Run to Remember 5K, participants wore the names of service members they wished to honor. I carried the names of five Puerto Rican heroes who gave their lives in service to our country:

  • Sgt. José Joel Reyes
  • Col. Víctor Tavárez Rodríguez
  • Chief Warrant Officer 4 Héctor Ramírez
  • CW2 Carlos Acevedo
  • Staff Sgt. José Omar Sostre

As I made my way along the course, I passed hundreds of blue tribute signs, each displaying the face and story of someone who made the ultimate sacrifice. Every photo represented a family forever changed, a life cut short, and a legacy that deserves to be remembered.

It was impossible not to slow down and reflect.

This wasn’t just another 5K.

It was a reminder that the freedom to lace up my running shoes, explore trails, and pursue new adventures came at a price paid by others.

Crossing the finish line felt different that day.

Instead of celebrating what I had accomplished, I found myself thinking about those who never had the chance to finish their own journey.

The miles belonged to them.
