A Walk Through the Vineyard

Lu Mil Wine Run 5K | Dublin, North Carolina
Sometimes the most meaningful adventures aren’t the ones we plan.
They start because someone says, “Hey… wanna come with us?”

When my friends invited me to join them for the Lu Mil Wine Run 5K, I said yes.
We had worked together for over five years. Although our careers eventually took us in different directions, our friendship remained. Life gets busy, and it’s easy to assume you’ll always have time to catch up “later.”
We all say, “We’ll get together soon.”
Then months become years.
I’m really glad this time we didn’t wait.

That morning wasn’t about setting a personal record or chasing a finish time.
It was about friendship.
So we walked.
As we made our way through the beautiful vineyard, surrounded by rows of grapevines and peaceful countryside, we caught up on life. We laughed about old work stories, caught up on everything life had thrown at us, and for a few hours forgot about deadlines, bills, responsibilities…all the adult stuff.
There was no competition.
No pressure.
At the time, it was just three friends walking through a vineyard.
Just a few weeks later, I’d complete my first Spartan Race.
I’d return to camping.
I’d begin hiking regularly.
Eventually, those miles would inspire this blog, Rebuilding Through Miles.
But on that Saturday morning, none of that existed yet.
It was simply three friends enjoying a beautiful walk.
No idea that one little “yes” would end up changing the course of my year.
Looking back, I realize that every journey has a beginning.
Sometimes it starts with a plane ticket.
Sometimes it starts with a hike.
And sometimes…
It starts because a friend asks, “Do you want to come with us?”
I’m so thankful they did.
Reflection
One of the greatest gifts in life is having people who continue walking beside you, even after your paths no longer cross every day.
One thing I’ve learned is that good friendships don’t disappear just because life gets busy.
Sometimes you pick up right back up where you left off…like no time passed at all.
This 5K reminded me that making time for the people who encourage us is just as important as making time for ourselves.
Looking back now, I can see that saying “yes” to this invitation became one of the first steps in a year filled with adventures I never imagined.
Not because of the distance we walked…
But because one simple “yes” opened the door to many more.
Looking back now, I smile because I almost could’ve said no.
It was “just a 5k.”
Just a Saturday.
Just a walk.
Except it wasn’t.
It became another reminder that life has a funny way of changing direction when we stop overthinking and simply saying yes.
and honestly…
I’m trying to keep saying yes a little more often.
