Why I started Rebuilding Through Miles

There comes a moment when you realize life looks nothing like you imagined.

For me, that moment came at 38.

After years of putting everyone else first, I found myself starting over. My divorce had finally been finalized. My adult children had begun building lives of their own. My mom, who had lived with me for nine years, moved back to Puerto Rico.

For the first time in a long time, the house felt quiet.

I was overweight. Exhausted. Financially stressed. My health was demanding attention, and I felt disconnected—not only from other people, but from myself.

Then, one decision changed everything.

I went outside.

I started hiking.

One trail became another.

Then a camping trip.

Then a race.

Then another challenge I never thought I could do.

With every mile, I wasn’t just getting stronger.

I was rebuilding.

Today, I’m still a beginner runner. I’m still learning. I’m still growing. But I’ve discovered something important:

Adventure isn’t reserved for the fearless or the experienced. It’s for anyone willing to take the first step.

If you’ve ever felt stuck…

If you’ve ever waited for someone else to join you…

If you’ve ever believed you’re “too old,” “too busy,” “too out of shape,” or simply “not adventurous enough”…

I hope this space reminds you that it’s never too late to begin again.

This isn’t just a place to share hiking trails or race medals.

It’s a place to celebrate every step toward rebuilding a life you love.

Whether your first adventure is a walk around your neighborhood, your first hike, your first camping trip, or simply choosing yourself again…

You’re welcome here.

Welcome to Rebuilding Through Miles.

Let’s take the next step together

Until the next mile,

Shakira

  1. I love this! Everything you said resonates so deeply, I know it’s been a rough couple of years for both of us but I’m glad to see you embracing life and honestly you inspire me, there are things I do that I do that I am fearless in but there are more things I let myself get in my own way, I’ll never be a runner, that’s not me, but a gym girly seems feasible, tennis too and being worried about not being good enough isn’t a good enough excuse to not try. Thank you for the reminder.

    1. Thank you so much, Aubrey. ❤️ Your comment truly touched my heart. We’ve both had our share of challenges, so knowing this resonated with you means the world to me. And you’re absolutely right! You don’t have to be a runner. Whatever your “yes” looks like, I hope you go for it. I’ll be cheering you on every step of the way. Thank you for being here.
